The Gandhi Memorial School

History

The Gandhi Memorial School (“GMS”) was established by the then United Hindu Association. The GMS officially opened on 15 August 1947. Today, the GMS is a constitutionally mandated body of the Cape Hindu Cultural Society. The GMS was initially situated on the corner of Kildare and Main roads, Newlands. In 1971, as a result of the Apartheid laws, which saw Newlands being declared a “white area”, the land on which the school was based was expropriated and the GMS was forced to move.

Cultural Centre

The GMS endured 14 years of homelessness, using vacant garages, store rooms, bioscopes (offered by various generous individuals), and high schools to keep the school running. On 9 December 1984, the Cultural Centre was opened and in 1985, the GMS moved to the first floor in the Cultural Centre. This is the current premises of the school.

Where is the GMS?

The GMS is situated at 6 Jeram Avenue, Rylands Estate, 7764. However, the premises are also bound by 6 Jeram Avenue and the said premises occupy an entire block bound by these two roads.

What does GMS teach (syllabus)?

The GMS primarily aims to teach the basic Gujarati language, which includes the basic alphabet, sentences and basic conversational ability. The secondary aim is to discuss basic poems, short stories and folklore tales.

Other Functions & Events

The GMS hosts the Gandhi Peace Walk, which has often been held at the Sea Point Promenade. The GMS also visits households once a year (during the month of Shraavan usually sometime between August and September) as part of the celebration of the Raksha Bandan ceremony (a special ceremony normally between siblings whereby a prayer is recited for the general well-being of the person) and tie Rakhees for all household members. The GMS hosts an annual Meravdoh (concert) function, where the children present various dance and other cultural items and also hosts a Gandhi Jayanti celebration on 2 October of each year.
